2013 Kia K9 Debuts In Korea

Kia has unveiled its new K9 flagship sedan, which goes on sale Korea in the first half of the year.

Kia has also confirmed that the K9 will be sold outside of its domestic market, though the name and exact timings for overseas launches won’t be revealed until later this year.

Previously referred to as the KH, the new model is Kia’s first rear-wheel drive sedan and it’s set to serve as the automaker’s flagship.

Kia boasts that the K9 exemplifies the “best of the best” design, driving performance and high technology capabilities.

The styling draws its inspiration from the theme “distinctive, modern and classic,” which as it turns out includes LED headlights, bold character lines, and a purposeful stance. According to Kia, the K9’s profile was a key focus for the design team. It features a simple side character line to give a feeling of spaciousness while emphasizing the new model’s boldness.

While the K9 name may seem odd, it continues Kia’s naming practice for models, such as the existing K5 and K7, sold in its domestic market. The letter “K” represents not only Kia and Korea, but also refers to the Greek word “Kratos” (meaning powerful, domination and reign) and the English word “Kinetic” (meaning active, dynamic).

Kia hasn’t gone into details about its K9’s mechanical package but beneath the sheet metal is the same rear-wheel drive platform from the Hyundai Equus luxury sedan, not the smaller Genesis as previously predicted. This means the K9 is likely to come with a V-8 engine matched to an eight-speed, or possibly even a 10-speed, automatic transmission.

A starting price below the $58,750 sticker of the Equus in the U.S. would also be likely, that is, if the K9 ever does arrive. But considering the following statement from Soon-Nam Lee, Kia’s overseas marketing chief, “This all-new rear-wheel drive large sedan will definitely become the leading model of our lineup around the world, showcasing the best of the best of Kia,” it certainly would be strange if it didn’t.

Kia Signs on to Support World Environment Day 2012

Kia Motors Corporation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to confirm its support for the organization’s hallmark World Environment Day (WED). The official signing ceremony took place at the United Nations compound in Nairobi, Kenya and marked Kia’s continued commitment to environmental sustainability.

Commemorated on every 5 June since 1972, WED has grown to become the most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. WED activities take place year round as a worldwide call to action for individuals and organizations to mobilize environmental activities. This year Kia will award an eco-friendly vehicle to five participating organizations whose WED activity mobilization scores high on criteria as evaluated by UNEP.

The five vehicles to be awarded include four 2012 all-new Kia Rios and one 2012 Kia Optima Hybrid, which were chosen for their high fuel efficiency and to highlight 2012’s WED theme ‘Green Economy: Does it include you?’

“Through participation in environmental partnerships such as with UNEP we aim to support steadfast efforts to solve global environmental challenges,” said Soon-Nam Lee, Director of Overseas Marketing, Kia Motors Corporation. “This year’s ‘Green Economy’ theme strongly resonates with our core environmental management objectives of achieving low carbon emissions, resource efficiency and placing the environment at the forefront of all our business activities.”

The signing ceremony was attended by Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UNEP; Izabella Teixeira, Brazilian Environment Minister and MK Kim, President of Kia’s Middle East and Africa Regional Headquarters.

“I would like to thank Kia for their support, and we look forward to awarding five new vehicles to grassroots groups and organizations that are making notable strides towards a green economy. We hope these vehicles will further the important work they are doing and encourage all groups in any region to participate,” said Steiner.

Over the past month, Kia has emphasized its support for UNEP and WED via its online campaign ‘Kia Likes Caring,’ which is hosted on the company’s official Facebook page. The ongoing campaign aims to encourage participation and magnify awareness of Kia’s social responsibility programs across its 1.6 million plus fan base. Fans are able to indicate their support for several causes by sharing “Kia Likes Caring” badges on their profiles, and 100 lucky participants were selected earlier this month to receive official WED T-shirts for showing their support.

Video: How Kia went about building the Track’ster Concept

465c8129a0ce92582358bc0b02949a49

At the 2012 Chicago Auto Show, Kia Motors unveiled its new Track’ster Concept, a study that looks into a performance version of the Soul compact car. So, how did all the designers and engineers sit down to plan and built the Track’ster Concept? The guys at Motor Trend followed the whole process and video taped it all for us to see.

Refresher: The Kia Track’ster Concept is powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 250-hp – 66 percent more than the production model. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission which transfers power to all four wheels. So far the Kia Track’ster Concept is not intended for production.

Kia KH Flagship Sedan Breaks Cover

Just the Facts:

  • Kia has revealed sketches of the KH, its first rear-wheel-drive vehicle, a flagship sedan based on the Hyundai Genesis and set for a launch in Korea in the first half of this year.
  • Kia said launch timings for overseas markets are yet to be confirmed.
  • The sedan is expected to be named K9 in the Korean market.

SEOUL, South Korea — Kia has revealed sketches of the KH, its first rear-wheel-drive vehicle, a flagship sedan based on the Hyundai Genesis and set for a launch in Korea in the first half of this year. The sedan, which is expected to be named K9 in the Korean market, is a major enhancement for Hyundai's sister brand.

Kia said launch timings for overseas markets are yet to be confirmed, but the car is expected to be sold in North America. Kia, in a statement, said there are no plans to sell the car in Europe.

The K9 was previewed last year in the Kia GT Concept, which turned heads at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. The GT Concept featured rear-wheel drive, aeronautical design cues and suicide doors. While Kia did not reveal any powertrain specifications on the K9, the GT Concept was equipped with a 390-horsepower 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 engine linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

It is also expected that other engine options may include the Genesis' 3.8-liter V6.

"The design concept behind KH is distinctive, modern and classic," said Kia in a statement.

The Korean automaker promises that the sedan will get "high-tech features and infotainment."

Kia Track'ster Concept Teased Ahead of 2012 Chicago Auto Show

Kia is preparing to wow audiences at this month’s 2012 Chicago Auto Show with a new hot hatch concept based on its popular Soul.

A teaser for the new concept, which will be labeled the Kia Track’ster, has been released today, revealing a sporty three-door hatchback body, low profile, and what appears to be a very aggressive bodykit.

Kia describes the vehicle as being the “ultimate performance” Soul, and compared to the regular Soul hatchback on which it’s based it certainly looks that way.

The concept will showcase Kia’s evolving design language, which on recent unveilings like the new Forte and GT Concept has been seen to take a much more aggressive look with sharper and more prominent lines as well as sportier proportions.

No word on what drivetrain is lurking under the new body though our best guess would be the newly-developed Gamma Turbo GDI engine found in sister company Hyundai’s 2012 Veloster Turbo. The tiny 1.6-liter four-cylinder packs a powerful punch thanks to its combination of turbocharging and direct-injection technologies, scoring an official rating of 201 horsepower.

Look out for the Kia Track'ster Concept’s unveiling at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show in less than two weeks, and stay tuned to our dedicated show page for all the latest updates.
