How to maintain and upkeep a freshly cut Christmas tree

For those of you who insist on using an awesome REAL Christmas tree, first we would like to congratulate for keeping the tradition going. Secondly, we know it's hard work and it deserves a certain salutation to have such a tree in your home during the holidays.

In this post, we will be giving advice on how to keep your tree as fresh as possible during this Holiday Season.
  1. Refresh the tree by making a straight cut, taking one inch off the bottom of the tree and immediately placing it in water. This will improve water uptake.
  2. Place the tree in a stand that can hold at least 1 gallon of water. You should expect the tree to take up more water as time goes by. Water the new tree until water uptake comes to an end.
  3. Always keep the base of a tree in water, no matter what you do. If the base dries out, resin will form over the cut end and the tree will not be able to absorb water and will dry out quickly. You don't need anything other than regular tap water. If the bottom of the tree becomes dry and closes off with resin you will have to cut your tree again, which you want to avoid at all costs. Commercially prepared mixes like aspirin, sugar and other additives introduce into the water are not necessary. Research has shown that plain water will keep a tree fresh, so save yourself some time and money.
  4. Check to make sure all your Christmas Lighting apparel is up to date and fully functional. You should also make sure you are using UL accessories only. We also suggest you use smaller lights to minimize heat generation on the tree itself, reducing the chances of fire.
  5. Remove your tree before it dries out, you don't not want to take down your tree once it's already dried. If you've followed our steps you're looking at keeping your tree for about 5 weeks but some exceptions Some species keep their moisture longer that others.

Safety Tips

Tips on how to keep your car safe while you are shopping!

While you're having the time of your life, shopping around and looking for great deals things might be quite different on the outside. Parking lots can be quite a dangerous place for innocent cars. Edmunds has put together a great list of tips to keep you, your car and your belongings safe!

  • Avoid leaving shopping bags or valuables visible
The trunk is the best place to place your goodies-filled shopping bags because it makes your items invisible from the outside which will definitely keep thieves away.
If you own a hatchback, crossover, station-wagon or SUV, you should definitely be using your Cargo Cover to keep your things safe. If you don't have one make sure you contact our Parts and Service Department, we will be glad to order one for you.

  • Don't be afraid to drop-off the expensive items at home
Your home is usually a much  better alternative to your car to keep and store your gifts. Make sure you make some stops at the house to drop off those high-priced gifts for the lucky ones. Even if it's a few minutes away, you're better off stopping by than taking the risk to lose it all.
  • Use your interior storage to keep your cabin clean
Don't leave accessories that will tell thieves that you own the latest smartphone, or that you have an expensive GPS. Make sure you put as much as you can away in the little storage compartments of your car.

  • Open your car safely when you're going home!
Most cars are now open with a remote, the great thing about that is that it's really convenient. But, it's important to remember that you shouldn't open your car from too far away or to open all the doors if you only need the driver's door to open. This will prevent strangers from entering your car without you seeing it.
  • Stay focused on the road and your surroundings
Unfortunately, you won't be the only one shopping intensely. Make sure you use Backup camera (if available) to detect any activity behind your car as you back out of your spot. Also, take a second to make sure your phone is properly connected via Bluetooth so that you can make/receive calls while staying focused on the road.

Be sure to visit our website if you're looking for a new car or accessories for the holidays.

Here is our Top 5 GPS Applications for iPhone and iPad!

If you're a little lost and don't know what GPS App to get for your next road trip, keep on reading, we have some great comparisons coming up!

Everyone is going to be taking long road trips during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Season, so we figured it was the right time to compare GPS Applications for iPhone and iPad.

As we all know the great master Google has released Google Maps for iPhone about a year ago, and this was life changing due to difficulties getting somewhere using the old Native Maps (by Apple) on the iPhone. This revolutionized the use of the iPhone for road trips.

Our number one favorite GPS app is...:

1. Google Maps
best gps apps for iphone and ipad google maps

Google Maps is a voice guided turn-by-turn GPS navigation app developed by Google. Discover new places, tour cities with 360-degree street view, and sign in to locations. Save past searches and favorite places. Get live traffic updates and find public transit, biking and walking directions.

2. Apple Maps

With Apple Maps, you get real-time traffic information to calculate your ETA. Maps gives you details on what’s causing a backup, so you can tell if there’s a major incident or just a temporary slowdown. And if traffic’s a mess, Maps offers alternative routes to save you time.

When you’re driving or walking, Maps helps you find your way to your destination with turn-by-turn spoken directions. As you approach a turn, Maps speaks directions, so you can keep your eyes on the road. And the screen turns into a 3D perspective of the road ahead. When you enter into a turn, the viewing angle changes dynamically to show you where to go. If you miss a turn, don’t worry. Maps automatically reroutes you and updates your ETA. And all along the way, large signs and arrows guide you in the right direction and let you know how long it’s going to take to get there — even if your screen is locked.

Pro Tip:
A great feature on this one is that you can transfer your directions from your Mac directly to your iPhone or iPad!

3. Waze

Waze is a community based mapping and navigation app developed by Waze Inc. Waze features voice guided navigation, and learns your frequent destinations. Report accidents, police traps, road closures and more. Earn points each time you contribute road info and move up the ranks. Very cool feature!

4. Mapquest

Mapquest is a voice guided turn-by-turn GPS navigation app developed by AOL Inc. Search for new restaurants, explore new places. and look for gas stations. Mapquest displays live traffic conditions, and will reroute you around traffic jams. Share your current location with friends using email, text messages, Facebook, or Twitter.

5. Scout

With Scout GPS, users can avoid getting stuck in traffic. See traffic-based commute times, street level traffic, nearby places, and more. Users can easily report traffic congestion, police, road hazards and accidents. Discover new restaurants, food, live music, movies, and more. Save your favorite routes and get personalized GPS voice guidance.

Seize The Day After Thanksgiving With These Tips

Whether you were one of the millions of Black Friday shoppers in the U.S. last year, or you are joining in for the first time, being well organized is key. A good plan will help you prioritize and check items off your list. Here are six tips to seize big savings the day after Thanksgiving:

  1. Do your homework -  Jot down your gift list so you know what you need to purchase. Then take the very important step of determining your budget. Get a jump on sales by signing up for email alerts at your favorite retailers and liking their Facebook pages.
  2. Compare prices, products and deals - Research the normal retail price of the items you want, the best sale price to date, then the best Black Friday advertised price at each store in your shopping area. Keep in mind the best deal isn’t always on Black Friday.
  3. Make a game-day plan - By making the list, you can determine where each item you want will be the cheapest and what time the stores are planning to open. Then, you can map out the most practical travel route.
  4. Avoid crowds if you can - Many department stores have limited-time offers, or items only available until they are sold out. If your list includes those items, you may feel the need to be at the store early. However, that’s not always necessary. If you don’t have a particular need for hot-ticket items, arrive at the store a few hours after opening to avoid the morning rush. To avoid crowds altogether, shop online. Some big-name stores have specials that will take place online at the same time as they do at the actual stores.
  5. Use your smartphone - Instead of carrying lists and advertising flyers for each store, simply install checklist apps. You’ll have all your gift lists and prices in one convenient place. Upload flyers when needed to double-check or dispute prices.
  6. Stick to your plan - Be sure not to let the frenzy of the day affect your judgment. Don't buy on impulse or under pressure and decide in advance what you want and what you can afford. No matter how big a bargain something may seem, once you’ve spent your budgeted amount, put the credit card away.

Keep Your Community Safe With These Halloween Driving Tips

Help protect trick-or-treaters by following these driving safety tips on Halloween, or on the night your community hosts Halloween activities. Be especially careful between 4 and 8 p.m., when most severe vehicle/young pedestrian collisions happen.

  • Drive slowly, and don't pass stopped vehicles. The driver might be dropping off children.

  • Park your mobile phone. Avoid distractions by waiting until you've stopped to call, text, or surf. Get more mobile phone safety tips.

  • Watch for children darting into the street. Kids can cross the street anywhere, and most young pedestrian deaths happen at spots other than intersections.

  • Yield to young pedestrians. Children might not stop, either because they don't see your vehicle approaching or don't know how to safely cross the street.

  • Communicate with other drivers. Always use your turn signals. And if you have to pull over to drop off or pick up your kids, turn on your hazard lights.

And, to keep your own trick-or-treaters safe:

  • Teach them how to safely cross streets. They should look both ways and cross only at corners and crosswalks.

  • Consider indoor community Halloween programs for younger kids. Some communities also offer to help you inspect your kids' treats to make sure they're safe to eat.

  • Brighten them up. Give them flashlights and glow sticks, and/or use reflective tape on their costumes, so drivers can see them.

October is Fall Car Care Month!

Whether you do it yourself or take your car to a professional service technician, the Car Care Council recommends these four proactive steps to make sure your car is ready for winter driving.

Read more here: http://www.sacbee.com/2013/10/01/5784448/five-tips-for-fall-car-care-month.html#storylink=cpy
  1. Battery – Keep the battery connections clean, tight and corrosion-free. Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it's wise to check the battery and charging system. Because batteries don't always give warning signs before they fail, it is advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old.
  2. Heater, Defrosters and Wiper Blades – Check that the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system are working properly as heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons, such as defrosting. Wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don't properly clean your windshield should be replaced. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months. When changing the blades, be sure to also check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir.
  3. Tires – Check the tires, including the tire pressure and tread depth. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop.
  4. Brakes – Have the brake system checked, including brake linings, rotors and drums. Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important when driving on icy or snow-covered roads.

Use These Easy Tips To Ensure Your New Car Keeps Running Like Brand New

Being car considerate shouldn’t stop after the break-in. Drive with care every day and your car will reward you with longer intervals without repair.

  • Do not race your car’s engine during start-up.This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside.
  • Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation.
  • Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea. The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components.
  • Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped.
  • Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs.
  • Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber.
  • When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.
  • Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

Regular Maintenance Will Save Your Car's Life, As Well As Your Own

Maintenance isn't just important to the life of your car, but it is also a major safety issue. If it has been over a year since your last vehicle inspection, you could be at a major risk. You should be aware of any mechanical issues your car may have as they could potentially lead to accidents.

Some simple tips include, ensuring you have the proper tire pressure, as this could lead to a blowout. This also hinders your car's performance including gas mileage. Also, another area to focus upon is your brakes. You should not be able to feel a "softness" or a vibration in the pedal when the brakes are applied.

To schedule a vehicle inspection or service head over to the Huffines Kia McKinney website!

Kia Motors America Extends Partnership With Donorschoose.Org To Benefit Public School Students Nationwide In 2013

After providing educational resources to nearly 500,000 public school students across America last year, Kia Motors America (KMA) today announces a significant extension of its philanthropic partnership with DonorsChoose.org, the online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need.  As part of the continuing relationship, Kia is launching a major funding campaign in 2013 that will raise the company’s total impact to $5 million in just two years.  To date, Kia has matched the support of 21,000 citizen philanthropists to collectively deliver more than $2.1 million in resources to classrooms nationwide.

“Kia Motors America (KMA) has grown to become the eighth largest brand in the U.S. by volume, and as we grow, our culture and core values compel us to give back to the communities that we call home and contribute to a better future for all,” said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of KMA and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia.  “The overwhelming response to last year’s collaboration with DonorsChoose.org was truly inspiring, and we are determined to help even more children – and teachers – in need in 2013.”

“Kia’s support has helped bring books, chess sets, butterfly gardens, guitars, basketballs, microscopes, and many more resources to America’s high-need classrooms,” said Charles Best, founder and CEO of DonorsChoose.org.  “DonorsChoose.org is grateful for Kia’s renewed commitment to helping thousands of students access the materials they need and the quality education they deserve.”

The announcement coincides with the unveiling of a new racing livery for the No. 36 Kia Racing Optima featuring DonorsChoose.org at a VIP “Stars and Cars” promotional event in New York City.  Kia will match consumer donations to classroom projects at public schools near Kia’s network of more than 765 retail showrooms across the country as well as the company’s U.S. headquarters in Irvine, Calif., and assembly plant in West Point, Ga.  Earlier this year, Kia highlighted the valuable work of DonorsChoose.org in a marketing integration with NBC’s hit show “The Voice” and made a substantial contribution to the charity’s efforts to rebuild 60 Oklahoma classrooms destroyed by tornadoes.

Kia Motors America’s top-selling urban passenger vehicle, the 2013 Soul, was named to Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com list of the 10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000. Chosen by the site’s editors, the 2013 Soul was celebrated for its fun and bold design, high-tech offerings and roominess.

“The Soul, which paved the way for Kia’s design led transformation with its fun and funky personality, quickly established a reputation as the spunkiest car in the Kia lineup, and now KBB has recognized it as one of the coolest vehicles on the market,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. “Kia has always strived to provide customers with value, style and substance, and the Soul fulfills that promise with an extensive roster of standard features and unique design that has become iconic.”

Monday Maintenance Tip: Lighten Up Your Keychain

Does your car key share a chain with a dozen or more other keys? That’s a pretty heavy load hanging off the car key when it’s in the ignition. The weight, combined with bouncing while you drive, can wear out the tumblers inside the ignition and eventually lead to ignition switch failure. To add years of service to your ignition switch, purchase a lightweight key chain that allows you to separate your ignition key from the others. Drive with only the ignition key in your ignition. If your ignition key “sticks” when you try to turn on the car, it’s a warning that your ignition switch is about to fail. Replace it before you get stranded.

Festival participants will be encouraged to “Share their Soul” through an interactive photo sharing game in which concert attendees are tasked with capturing their favorite moments of The Vans Warped Tour in real time based on the tagline “Rock and Roll. Punk and Soul.”  Concertgoers are turned into roving reporters, snapping pictures of people rocking out, pretending to drive Kia vehicles and anything else they feel captures the Vans Warped Tour experience.  Concertgoers also have the unique opportunity to receive Kia VIP passes, which allow them access to an exclusive private riser near the main stage, or in some cases, on the two main stages themselves, where they can enjoy spectacular views of the day’s biggest performances.

Soul Ranked Highest In Its Segment In Strategic Vision’s Total Quality Index Study

Kia Motors America (KMA) has been one of the fastest-growing car companies in the U.S. over the last five years, and its edgy urban passenger vehicle, the Soul – a key factor in that growth – was recently named to Strategic Vision’s 2013 list of Total Quality Vehicles. The list, compiled after consulting with new car buyers, reveals the fierce competition between brands to improve quality and win customer loyalty. The Soul was chosen by consumers as the leader in the small multi-function segment after receiving the highest Total Quality Index (TVI) score.

“Since its release in 2009, the Soul has been a prime example of Kia’s commitment to providing our customers with vehicles that feature world-class design, inspired driving dynamics and cutting-edge technology, all at an impressive value,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. “The Soul being named as a Strategic Vision ‘Total Quality’ vehicle really illustrates how far the Kia brand has come in a relatively short period of time.”

New vehicles were evaluated by 17,000 buyers who purchased 2013 models from September to November 2012.  These owners were surveyed to designate Strategic Vision’s 14th annual Total Quality leaders. “Kia Soul being a leader in this segment is substantial, as the ‘Small Car Multi-Function’ segment is highly competitive and really requires that the leader have a great emotional impact on owners along with its superior quality features.  Kia Soul provided all of this and more, as customers reported in our comprehensive study,” stated Alexander Edwards, president of Strategic Vision.

Kia Announces Complimentary Scheduled Maintenance Program For The All-New 2014 Cadenza Premium Sedan

Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced a complimentary scheduled maintenance program available for the all-new 2014 Cadenza premium sedan.  The program covers the first five factory-scheduled service appointments and is applicable for 36 months or 37,500 miles.  The program highlights yet another way Kia is elevating value to new levels of sophistication and promises to further differentiate the Cadenza from its competition.

“The Cadenza competes in a class in which customers have higher expectations for their ownership experience. Our complimentary scheduled maintenance program – a benefit many would not have previously associated with the Kia brand – fulfills those expectations,” said John Crowe, vice president of service and after sale operations, KMA.  “The program helps differentiate the Cadenza from its competition and illustrates Kia’s intentions of launching a credible contender into the emerging space between mainstream and luxury.”

Already a tremendous value at a starting MSRP of just $35,100 (not including $800 destination), the Cadenza packs power, technology and refinement in Kia’s first full-size sedan, and the newly announced complimentary scheduled maintenance program only adds to the vehicle’s value proposition in its segment.  Complimentary scheduled maintenance is available to customers who either purchase or leas3 a new 2014 Cadenza and complete the maintenance work for their vehicles at participating Kia retailers.  The complimentary scheduled maintenance program, which excludes wear and tear items such as tires and brakes, is another benefit along with Kia’s industry leading 10 year/100,000 mile new-car warranty and Roadside Assistance.

UVO eServices Makes Complimentary Scheduled Maintenance Easy
As Kia’s most technologically advanced vehicle, the 2014 Cadenza comes standard with UVO eServices, which makes scheduling service appointments easier than ever. UVO eServices monitors service intervals and will alert the owner when it’s time to schedule an appointment at a Kia retailer.  Following on-screen prompts, the system has the ability to contact the retailer and schedule service appointments at the owner’s convenience.  UVO eServices is an enhanced telematics suite that offers a number of safety, maintenance and infotainment functions, including Automatic Diagnostics, Manual Diagnostics, Scheduled Diagnostics, vehicle maintenance, and eServices Guide, many of which are run through the owner’s Smartphone equipped with the UVO eServices app, which is available at no charge.

Through the UVO eServices owner's portal, known as "Car Care Web," owners can check vehicle diagnostics, vehicle status, maintenance schedules, driving behavior, and schedule appointments with their preferred or nearby Kia retailer via their home computer or mobile device.  If UVO's eServices identifies a problem by way of the Automatic Diagnostics function, it will communicate the vehicle's issue(s) and its location to Kia's 24/7 call center or will schedule an appointment online with the nearest Kia dealership upon the owner’s request.  Additionally, the user can take advantage of Scheduled Diagnostics from their Smartphone, setting a monthly diagnostic check of the vehicle.  Upon completion, any issues found are automatically forwarded to Car Care Web.

Cars VS. Computers

If car manufacturers had developed technology like computers, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash.........twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new  car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" Warning  light.

7. The airbag system would ask, "Are you  sure?" before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

Kia Unveils All-New 2014 Soul At New York Auto Show

The Big Apple, perhaps America’s most iconic metropolis, is playing host to the global unveiling of Kia Motors’ most iconic people mover, the all-new 2014 Soul urban utility vehicle, today at the 113th New York International Auto Show.  The signature Soul design is instantly recognizable yet thoroughly fresh, with more than a passing nod to the hot Track’ster concept that was unveiled last year.  Riding on a new chassis that is stiffer, longer and wider, the all-new Soul has grown up without losing its edge, allowing for more passenger and cargo room while reducing NVH levels. Increased torque and significant suspension upgrades make the 2014 Soul a nimble and agile companion in congested urban environments.  Honoring Soul owners’ fierce individualism, three unique trim levels will be available when U.S. sales are expected to begin in the third quarter of this year: Base, Plus and Exclaim.  Pricing will be announced closer to the Soul’s launch date.
“When the first Soul was introduced in 2009, everyone at Kia believed we had a hit on our hands, but we didn’t realize how big that hit was going to be,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of marketing and communications at Kia Motors America (KMA). “The Soul moved the needle significantly from a sales and marketing perspective, becoming one of our top-selling cars and inspiring the now-legendary hamster commercials. It was important that the all-new Soul remain true to the original iconic design while infusing it with improved driving dynamics and desirable features that add appeal, sophistication and value.”
Keeping what made the current Soul special while addressing areas for improvement was no easy task.  As the design team at Kia’s California studio began putting virtual pen to virtual paper, engineers in the U.S. and Korea focused on making Soul a joy to drive. Starting with a solid foundation was a key factor, and the new body enjoys a 28.7 percent increase in torsional rigidity over the current Soul.  With the hard points set, the all-new Soul was boiled down to three focus areas: Maintaining the iconic design while adding modern cues; providing premium features and content; and improving driving dynamics that would make the 2014 Soul more desirable than ever.
Iconic DesignWell-known for the close link between its concept vehicles and production models, Kia Motors took no chances with the 2014 Soul.  When the wild Track’ster concept made its debut in 2012, Soul enthusiasts and pundits alike urged Kia to turn fantasy into reality.  With 18 months from design freeze to production, the stage was set for the all-new Soul and many of the concept’s dramatic design cues can be found in the production vehicle. Tom Kearns, chief designer at the California studio likened the Track’ster to a bulldog and that theme is expressed from almost any angle of the all-new Soul.
“The all-new Soul was one of the more difficult assignments we’ve taken on,” said Kearns. “Striking the right balance between the wonderful design of the current car with the audacious proportions and stance of the Track’ster was daunting.  It proved to be a truly collaborative effort with guidance from Peter Schreyer in Frankfurt and assistance from our studio in Korea. In the end, we’ve kept the essence of Soul while infusing it with more presence inside and out.”
The upright stance, squared shoulders and distinctive fender flares are instantly recognizable as Soul.  Combining a longer 101.2-inch wheelbase (up 0.8 inches), overall width that’s broadened to 70.9 inches (increased by 0.6 inches) and the same overall height of 63.4 inches, adds a more aggressive edge to the all-new Soul’s appearance.  Likewise, the wraparound greenhouse, high-mounted tail lights and tall ride height are all hallmark design elements.  Premium touches such as available LED front positioning lights and rear LED “halo” lights help connect Soul to siblings within the Kia lineup that share similar design cues, such as the 2014 Sorento CUV and 2014 Forte sedan1.
Exterior Track’ster similarities are easy to spot.  The large trapezoidal lower air intake is nearly a direct carryover of the concept, and the location of the available fog lights – down low and pushed to the leading edges – mirror those found on the Track’ster.  Kia’s signature grille is present, but it’s been reworked to more closely resemble the concept.  Adding a touch of flare, the unique “floating” body color panel inset into the lift gate has its roots based in the Track’ster as well.  Subtle enhancements include a wider (by 2.4 inches over the previous Soul) opening for the lift gate, allowing Soul to swallow more stuff.  While final color names have yet to be determined, the 2014 Soul will be available in seven new exterior hues, including the two seen on stage in New York:  Solar Yellow and Inferno Red.
Overall, the design team paid particular attention to instilling a more premium look and feel to the 2014 Soul’s interior. Liberal applications of soft-touch materials are found on the instrument panel, center console and door panels. Details such as available leather seating with improved lateral and thigh support, and the use of high-gloss piano-black trim pieces on the center console and dash elevate the Soul’s interior to new levels of sophistication.
Citing the current Soul interior as a starting point, Kia’s designers played up the circular theme found inside Track’ster.  “With the previous Soul, we kind of dipped our toe in the water when it came to incorporating the circular patterns,” noted Kearns. “But for the all-new Soul, we really wanted to lift as many of the Track’ster’s circular interior reference points as possible.”
Front and center is the triple-circle instrument cluster with deeply recessed gauges.  Along the door panels, sculpted circles incorporate the power windows and door locks. The center console features a round gear shift knob and push-button start – its location exclusive to Soul in the Kia lineup – which also are direct carryovers from Track’ster.  The front door-mounted speakers mirror the circular, high-mounted “floating” tweeters and utilize available LED-string light technology to create ripple-effect red-hued mood lighting.  The steering-wheel mounted controls are housed in Soul-exclusive circular groupings along the lower spokes with the buttons for the audio system and trip computer falling readily to the  thumbs, enabling the driver’s hands to remain on the wheel at all times.
“If you think about droplets falling into a still pond, you begin to visualize the inspiration for the all-new Soul’s interior design,” said Kearns.  “The design is organic, like the human body, and we feel it makes the interior that much more appealing to the driver and passengers.”  Taking that appeal a step further is Soul’s desirable list of standard and optional equipment.
A Street Soul Named ”Desire”An attractive package is a let-down if the contents don’t deliver.  Fortunately, the all-new Soul is set to delight right out of the gate.  Most prominent in the new instrument panel is the available eight-inch touch screen – the largest ever offered on Soul – which houses Kia’s second-generation telematics and infotainment system, UVO eServices2, combined with Kia’s first use of the Android-based operating platform. Launching with Soul, UVO eServices is now compatible with the iPhone and Android Smartphone.
UVO eServices is optional and takes in-car connectivity and media interplay to the next level, integrating a number of other Kia firsts. Topping that list is the high-definition capacitive touch screen. Its wide viewing angle affords better visibility and allows the user to scroll with the stroke of a finger.  Living side-by-side for the first time in a Kia vehicle, the audio/video and optional navigation controls are viewable on the home screen.  Combining the most accessed ancillary controls on a single screen helps reduce driver distraction and improves overall functionality and ease-of-use.  Additionally, the available larger Supervision Cluster/TFT LCD color screen found in the instrument binnacle now displays turn-by-turn directions from the navigation system, helping to keep the driver’s eyes looking forward.
Another first is the integration of Pandora3 internet radio, the revolutionary online radio network that allows the user to customize their listening experience.  Users will no longer manage Pandora through their Smartphone.  Instead, Pandora is preloaded into the headunit and accessible through the touch screen and Voice Command, displaying the artist, title and album cover art as well as allowing the user to conveniently skip songs, “like” the song with Pandora’s thumbs-up rating system, or manage preferred stations.
Arriving with a three month complimentary subscription to SiriusXM™4 Data Services and Travel Link, the all-new Soul has access to travel information such as road conditions, weather and security alerts as well as sports scores, movie times, stock prices and fuel prices through the screen’s graphical interface and electronic program guide.  Better still, customers will continue to have All Access to both Sirius and XM channels for the price of one should they elect to continue a paid  subscription after the three month trial period concludes.
Making all of this available technology easy to use is the industry-first integration of on-screen quick guide videos.  Easily accessed through the touch screen, users have the ability to view instructional videos that highlight all of the features and functionality of UVO eServices along with the Smartphone app5 and MyUVO.com, including MyPOIs, powered by Google Maps.  Combined, UVO eServices represents one of the most powerful and comprehensive infotainment systems on the market today. Making UVO eServices even more impressive is that there is no cost to the owner.
Technology aside, driver and passengers will enjoy a larger and significantly quieter cabin with incremental increases in front leg room (42.9 inches, 0.8 inches more than the current Soul), rear leg room (up 0.2 inches to 39.1), front headroom (increased 0.2 inches to 39.6) and front seat shoulder room (up 0.3 inches to 55.5).  The all-new Soul also offers a 0.5-inch lower hip point and a step-in height that’s reduced 0.2 inches, allowing for even easier ingress and egress. Overall cargo capacity is increased by a half cubic foot, to 24.2.  Liberal use of expansion foam (replacing the previously used block foam) thoroughly fills body cavities, reducing outside wind and road noise.  A reinforced isolation pad in the cargo area and poly-urethane-layered carpet helps reduce overall interior noise levels by approximately 3 decibels.
The Base Soul comes standard with a long list of features that set it apart from the competition.  Power windows, door locks and (heated) outside mirrors, a telescoping steering wheel and a six-speaker AM/FM/MP3 audio unit are all standard. Bluetooth®6 hands-free wireless technology, SiriusXM™ satellite radio with three months complimentary service and USB/AUX inputs round out the Base Soul’s impressive audio/infotainment equipment.  Desirable options include remote keyless entry, 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control and a six-speed automatic transmission.
The Soul Plus takes a step up in standard and available optional amenities. Attractive 17-inch alloy wheels shod with 215/55R-17 tires, outside mirror turn-signal indicators, auto-on/off head lights and unique fender garnish distinguish the Plus from the Base exterior.  Inside, the Plus benefits include a floor console stowage box with integrated arm rest, UVO eServices, Rear Camera Display7 and rear seat center arm rest.  Options include navigation, an upgraded Infinity®8 audio system, string-LED front speaker surround mood lighting, fog lights, a panoramic sunroof – a Soul first – leather seating with segment-exclusive ventilated front driver and passenger seats, and seat heaters for all four outboard positions, a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat, leather wrapped and heated steering wheel and a leather-wrapped gear shift knob.
The Soul Exclaim adds to the Plus as standard features 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/45R-18 tires, fog lights, body-color bumper “tusks,” projector head lights, front LED positioning lights and rear LED “halo” lights. Open the door and standard amenities include a high-gloss piano-black center console, cooled glove box, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob, 10-way power driver’s seat with lumbar adjustment and auto-dimming rearview mirror. Optional equipment includes navigation, Infinity audio, front speaker LED mood lighting, panoramic sunroof, leather seating with front driver and passenger ventilation and heating for all four outboard positions.  Supervision Cluster/TFT LCD screen, HID head lights, push button start and automatic climate control make the Exclaim the most premium Soul ever.
Improved Driving DynamicsBuilt on an all-new chassis that is nearly 29 percent stiffer than before, the Soul’s stout skeleton provides the base for a vehicle that places a premium on driving dynamics.  Engineers put their efforts in strengthening the body at key connection points along the cowl, upper and lower B-pillars, cross members, and at the C-pillars.  Fully, 66 percent of the chassis utilizes either Ultra High Strength Steel (35 percent) or High Strength Steel (31 percent).  The A-pillar is 0.8-inches narrower, allowing for improved outward visibility, but through the use of Ultra High Strength Steel, it’s lighter and stronger.  The application of structural adhesive around the door openings and along the roof also helps improve torsional rigidity.
Significant attention has been focused on improving the all-new Soul’s ride and handling through heavily revised front and rear suspension set ups.  The front subframe utilizes four bushings (none are used on the current Soul) to reduce ride harshness and impact booms over rough pavement.  The stabilizer bar has been moved rearward on the McPherson strut front suspension, while the steering box has been moved forward, lending better balance and subsequently improved handling.
Relocating the steering box has also yielded benefits to on-center feel. The new one-piece steering gear housing is stronger than the two-piece unit used on the current Soul, improving steering response and reducing impacts felt through the wheel. Optional is a new Flex Steer™ system, which allows the driver to select from three distinct steering settings: Comfort, Normal and Sport.
The shock absorbers on the torsion bar rear suspension have been turned vertically (they were positioned at an angle on the current Soul) and lengthened.  This arrangement allows for more suspension travel, improving ride comfort.
Motivation for the Base Soul is delivered by a gasoline direct injection (GDI) 130-horsepower (at 6,300 rpm) 1.6-liter all-aluminum DOHC four-cylinder engine.  The GAMMA engine produces 118 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,850 rpm.  The Plus and Exclaim models enjoy the more powerful 2.0-liter NU power plant.  For the all-new 2014 Soul, the engine is updated with GDI technology. Power is rated at 164 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 151 lb.-ft. of torque at a 4,000 rpm. Both engines have been tuned to provide more low-end torque (nine percent more torque at 1,500 rpm on the 2.0-liter; five percent more on 1.6-liter) for an improved around-town driving experience.  The 1.6-liter engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission or, optionally, to a six-speed automatic. The Plus model may be equipped with either transmission while the Exclaim is available exclusively with the six-speed automatic.
